Featured Vacation Rental#11-Midnight Special

Fantastic! Truly something special. Headed up to the island for July 4th - one of the best weekends away I've had. The cabin itself is tidy and well-appointed, though obviously rustic. Certainly had no trouble with the lack of electricity and hot water. And with no cell service (AT&T - I believe Verizon works) it was the perfect environment to disconnect. Stove works great but we cooked on the grill and fire mainly - lots of wood and charcoal available. The screened off porch with two hammocks or the new wooden jetty are where we spent our time though honestly. No bugs to worry about and a nice breeze off the lake kept it comfortable. Composting bathroom was in great condition. So that brings me to the highlight: The island itself. Large enough that you have privacy, small enough you feel like you're practically on the lake. And of course it comes with its own family of eagles and perfect line of sight on sunrise and sunset. Magic stuff. Getting there, rent a boat from the super helpful Merrill's Marina nearby - we kept it low key but with a fancy boat you could be exploring the lake all weekend.

“Most Relaxing Two Days Ever!” 5 of 5 stars As a family of four, we were really looking to enjoy our last breath of summer before school started. We spent two nights in the Supervisor cabin and had the most relaxing and fun couple of days. The hosts are so accommodating and even drove us up the river so that we could tube down, lazy river style. So many water toys are available such as paddle boards, kayaks, tubes and canoes. The grounds are clean and inviting and the cabin has a beautiful fire pit to hang around at night making s'mores and watching shooting stars. Can't say enough good things about this wonderful experience. We can't wait to go back! Room Tip: The Supervisor cabin is large and right on the water.

“it's a family place ..” 5 of 5 stars my family and I have been staying there for our traditional fishing week for the better part of 30 years .. since long before Steve and Amy took it over and made it their own. They're kind .. considerate people who go out of their way to help make your stay perfect. Perhaps that's why they are one of the few places that are growing by leaps and bounds. If you're looking for a place to vacation, winter or summer in the Rockwood, Moose River area .. you're not going to find a better one anywhere.

“exceptional service, friendly & informative owners” 5 of 5 stars While trying to find the best snowmobile trails in ME several years ago, Gray Ghost kept us informed, through emails and the Fb page about conditions for our party of 8 -- they communicate well and promptly. The trails are superb! Summer time the river is relaxing so rent one of the boats and go relax. The cabins are super clean with modern amenities. We have been yearly for several years now! We love Gray Ghost camps. Room Tip: get as close to the river as you can to spot the deer across the river!

“We come back year after year...” 5 of 5 stars My friend and I have been staying at the Gray Ghost for years. Steve and Amy are great hosts and have improved the camps every year. I usually go early May at ice out fishing. Amy and Steve have provided us not only hospitality and comfort but we have become friends and enjoy conversing about the area every year. This year is no different in that we will be staying at Gray Ghost in early May. Hey there Steve and Amy will be talking soon,. Stayed May 2014, traveled with friends
“1st awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!” 5 of 5 stars Came up here with some friends was great. Very quite beautiful view of the lake. NO rain. Wasn't able to fish close to camp due to spawning season but rented a boat and went out to lake. Thought would be cold but was very good for September. I will definitely be back Thank you for a great relaxing time

“Most relaxed vacation!” 5 of 5 stars The clean and well equiped cabins had all we needed for a fun weekend. The owners were so generous with their property. We had use of canoe, kayaks, paddle boards, life jackets at no cost. They had a grill, fire pit ( with wood), and great screened in porch. One night we paddled across the river and had a wonderful dinner at Maynards. I would highly recommend this spot for families as well as couples.

“Top notch river views, service, cabins!” 5 of 5 stars Gray Ghost Camps were an amazing find. We went up to Moosehead Lake last weekend (May) to fish and camp, and of course it DOWNPOURED all day on Saturday! Needless to say, we couldn't set up camp. We started checking around the camps and cabins in the area and most everyone said they wouldn't do a rental for just 1 night - even when we were standing there, dripping in their lobby! On a whim and a Google search, I called Gray Ghost. Not only did they let us take a cabin for the night, but they gave us a 3-bedroom at the 1-bedroom price! (It was just 2 of us and they were sold out of 1 bedrooms). Owners were friendly and welcoming. The setting of the cabins right on the river was so amazing, we just sat on the couch and watched the raindrops on the water for an hour! The rain eventually let up and we ended up catching a few fish at the dam down the street from the camp. We cleaned them up at the fish sink right by the water's edge while the sun set and ducks flew home. Grilled them up on the grill on our porch with a little lime and ginger and had one of the best weekends at our favorite lake. We will definitely be back, and hopefully next time, it won't be raining so hard and we can take one of the complimentary canoes out on the Lake! Thank you for saving our trip, Steve and Amy!

“Great place to do nothing, or do it all!” 5 of 5 stars This is our 5th stay at Gray Ghost, all but once in an older cabin right ON the river. Wonderful for families with kids, free use of kayaks, canoes, paddleboards, tubes, and other water toys--no need to rent a kayak for a day for a kid who uses it for 15 minutes! Owners obviously care for the place, constantly upgrading...

“Great place to stay!'nnn” 5 of 5 stars Love this place everything you need and if there is something you don't have just ask they will accommodate when ever possible. The owners Amy and Steve are simply amazing. We lost electricity last time we were there and steve set up a generator. The cabins are clean and fully stocked. Very reasonable rates also. I just can't say enough good things about this place and can't think of anything bad to say!!!!

“Nicest people and an incredible location. Been going there for years twice this year. Best value for the money as well. And Ohhh” 5 of 5 stars I just got home yesterday from a quick jaunt for the smelt run. I hit it just right. I also just booked my next trip up for next month. The camps are in a premium location. The owners couldn't be any nicer and they keep the place very neat both inside and out. We have gone with children too and the kids have a great time there as well and look forward to going again in June. The term camps is an understatement its a little cottage on your own piece of paradise with all the comforts of home. It took us years to find this location and now I wouldn't think of staying anywhere else. There's really no place better.

We look forward to our yearly trip... The owners are great people and treat you like family...This is one vacation we will NEVER give up... Thank you Amy & Steve...

“Love the Gray Ghost Camps” Lots to do, but also a great place to just hang out and do nothing. The rustic cabin was clean and had everything we needed. Spent a lot of time listening to the loons and feeding the ducks.
“Beautiful Place!” My family of 7 stayed here and we loved it. Instead of putting is all in one cabin which we had planned to do, once we got there they suggested we have two cabins for the same price so we could have more room! That was so thoughtful of them. The owners are very friendly and helpful. The cabins are clean and modern. We enjoyed the use of the free canoes, kyaks and paddle boards. The Moosehead River is beautiful. I would reccommend this to anyone! Also a great price.

“Relaxation!” Loved our week at Gray Ghost Camps. Steve and Amy are super hosts, and relaxation is the theme. Plenty to do at camp, fishing, kayaking, or just watching the river flow on by. The waterfowl are plenty, and we loved the Canadian Geese and their little ones! In any direction you can find hiking trails that show off the beautiful area. Can't wait for our next trip!

We had a great stay with Gray Ghost camps. My brother and I used the cabin as our home base while fishing the Moose and the East Outlet. We had plenty of space to spread out, and enjoyed coming back to the cozy cabin after a full day on the water. The beds were comfortable, the bathrooms were clean, and the location was perfect for our purposes. Amy was also an excellent host -- check in/out was seamless, and she gave us helpful tips about the nearby rivers. We hope to be back soon!

We had an awesome time at the cabin! Amy was super friendly and easy to work with, and she made sure that the cabin was in great shape when we arrived. It was clean and cozy, had great views, and was close to lots of other activities in the Moosehead Lake area. Amy even offered some fresh garden tomatoes and eggs from her chickens. All in all, it was a great experience. Can't wait to come back!

We loved this little camp in Rockwood. This was our first time to Moosehead area and we really enjoyed the river views all day long. Access to the resources at Gray Ghost was very nice. The views of Mt. Kineo are incredible from inside the camp and on the front lawn.

What wonderful and welcoming people. A real joy to meet such nice folks. The cabin is in a lovely spot right on the river. After a hot day hiking, we jumped right in. As the sun settled, we were able to fish right off the dock. Can't say we caught much, but it was certainly relaxing. For my son, being adjacent to a campground provided the advantage of being able to meet new friends. If you are in the area to hike Mt. Kineo, the cabin is in a perfect spot as it is only a few minutes drive away from the Kineo shuttle. I would definitely recommend this fully stocked cabin.
Anton, Cologne, Germany
This cabin is located beautifully at a little river that flowes into the moosehead lake about 1 mile down stream. In the mornings you sit in the sun directly at the water on your own little patio directly at the water. At night we saw the Milky Way beautifully. The hosts a very nice, and in the campsite next-door you can rent boats for a very decent price. The cabinet itself is very unsophisticated but for a party of 4 completely enough a great deal for the money.

“We had fun!!!!” Having fond memories of the Greenville, Maine area I wanted to return for a vacation. We decided to stay in Rockwood at Gray Ghost. I'm glad we did. The cabin was very comfortable. Steve and Amy were nice and helpful. All the amenities you could want are here. We rented a boat one day to fish on Moosehead. Another day we had Steve take us to the damn above the camps so we could tube down the river. It took about 45 minutes and it was a blast! We had a campfire by the river. The camps are close, but we had good neighbors. With all the windows open and wonderful cross breezes I slept better than I had in ages. Good times!

LOVED!!! stayed in #11 midnight special. cute cabin, fully stocked, very clean. location is fantastic. not too far away from jackman/greenville in either direction but also not right in the heart of any town. cabin sat right on the river. had 2 twelve year old boys with us and they loved every minute. got to paddle board, kayak, play w/ the owner's children, and fish off the docks. would come back here again and again if it was closer to home.

Beautiful place right at the river and close to the lake, lots of activities (we did stand up paddling, took a boat on the lake, did some hiking, went moose watching), terrific hosts. It was the highlight of our three weeks in New England.
Margit Liander, Boston, MA
We loved this little cabin right on Moose River! It's a great location for exploring the Moosehead Lake Region. We had access to all of Gray Ghost Camps' amenities next door (kayaks, paddleboards, etc.) and the hosts were extremely helpful!

Second year in a row!! Eight guys staying in two cottages. Location perfect for our fly fishing spots!! Units are clean and reasonable! On the Moose River with use of there canoes and kayaks! Comfortable sleeping arrangements and easy access to water!!
Walther Heipertz, Heidelberg, Germany
All was as described. We enjoyed, that in the cottage - in spite of the unpretentious style, which one expects and sctually seeks in a cottage - all installations, you need for a comfortable accomodation, were provided and were functioning very well: heating, oven, coffee-machine, cold and warm water. It was also good, that we could supply ourselves with additional blanckets, because it was occasionaly pretty cold. Nevertheless these days were very recreational, because of the quietness and the impressive nature. Walther and Margitha

We had a lovely stay. We took advantage of the small motorboat rental from the next door camping ground, and bought fishing licenses for the day. Bring some groceries with you to take advantage of the full kitchen
Deni Tirrell, So. Portland, Maine
The camp was really great. We were given the option to choose from 3 different cabins when we arrived. Amy was welcoming and even allowed our 13 year old dog to come in to the office to say hello. The cabin was incredibly equipped with more than just the essentials and we found that we brought items that normally we need (even at hotel chain rooms that are for longer stays and have kitchens) but did not need this time! The furnishings were comfortable and we felt spoiled. The big fireplace was a favorite of ours and our dog and were glad each night that we could enjoy it. We also loved having horseshoes, a dock, picnic table and outside firepit available for use as well. We did have a tiny hiccup with our hot water and I felt awful calling at 6:20am, however, Amy and Steve were both extremely pleasant and the water heater reset in 5 minutes. They were very pleasant and responsive to anything we asked and offered suggestions on a place to visit. There is a binder with useful information in it on the surrounding areas. We will certainly be back!

“Beautiful location, neat clean cottages and Friendly, supportive owners” The scenery. The cottages are neat and clean and well equipped kitchen Steve and Amy are always available and supportive. They grew up in the area and are knowledgeable about other activities in the area. My husband likes to fish and I like to sew. This is perfect for both of us.

“family friendly island paradise” Since we are living in NYC with all its craziness, electronic devices and overbooked days, this little paradise island seemed like a dream, ESPECIALLY since we had bad cellphone reception, no electricity and no neighbors to talk to! Amy and Steve were super sweet, responsible and reachable. They truly created a sweet house that suits our style - lots of antique (yet super functioning) kitchen items, antique furniture and pictures. The interior of the outdoor looks like it had an interior designer involved ; ) . This is a perfect spot to GET AWAY from it all, fish , grill the fish on the BBQ or over the fire (in the perfectly build fire pit), read in one of the three hammocks, explode the magical, mossy birch woods, enjoy amazing sunsets AND sunrises (just walk across to the other side of the island... 1minute walk...) and sleep with just the sounds of surrounding water, no loud neighbors or even many mosquitos! we are planning to return next summer for sure!!!
